Genelaogy Research - Step 1
First of all:
share everything you already know
To start your Polish genealogy research, share everything you know about your Polish ancestors. Whether it’s a lot of information or just a few details – every piece matters. Don’t be discouraged if you only know a little.
I request all the information you have for two reasons: first, the more details I have, the higher the chances of finding additional relevant information; second, it helps me avoid searching for documents or facts you already know.
This includes basic information like your ancestor’s name, surname, as well as their date and place of birth. You may also know the names of their parents, siblings and children, their religion, last known place of residence in Europe, the date of their emigration and where they settled.
If you find any documents, please share them with me. They may be vital records, such as birth, marriage or death record, baptism certificates, personal identity cards, school and military records, old letters, censuses, certificates, passengers lists, ship manifests, old photographs, family trees.
Sometimes you may not even know what a document is about because it is written in a language you don’t know. Don’t worry, most likely I will be able to decipher it. Send even those documents that may seem absolutely unhelpful to you, perhaps that’s where I can find a clue to where to direct further search.
